Central Cabs History

Central Cabs was first established in 1981 when Ford Cortinas and Morris Itals were the common choice of taxi drivers, and radios were the size of small cabinets that had to be fitted into the boot of the vehicle, these were commonly known as boot-loaders.

Russian built Ladas also became a popular choice of taxi, which although reliable and sturdy, comfort was not exactly at a premium compared with the cars of today.
In the late '80s and early '90s cars became more comfortable with the introduction of Ford Escorts, Orions and Peugeot 405s. Radios also became smaller and moe reliable with less interference and crackle.

In the meantime Central Cabs was growing from strength to strength, and being a family run firm, had a reputation for friendly, honest and reliable drivers who worked for the company rather than just for themselves.

In 1996 the company was bought by John Woods, who although committed to keeping the reputation of being a family run business, wanted to make changes which would further enhance the service Central Cabs offered to their customers, and improve working conditions for the drivers.

One of the first changes he introduced was to have a standard for the company vehicles. The standard are white Vauxhall Astra diesel estates none of which are more than 5 years old, thus ensuring customer and driver safety

Entering the Millenium

In the year 2000 Central Cabs decided to go fully computerised and take advantage of the latest satellite tracking technology which allows us to pinpoint any cars position within a few feet.
Together with caller I.D. and the ringback facility, this really puts Central Cabs at the forefront of taxi companies in Southport and indeed throughout the northwest.

All our drivers are fully vetted by Sefton Council Licencing Department and have to fulfil their criteria before being issued with a badge.
This includes:

• Passing a knowledge test
• Passing a full medical examination
• Having a CRB check

Once working for our company ALL our drivers are expected to be helpful, friendly and reliable.

Most cars now have air conditioning, power steering, ABS brakes, airbags etc and together with our sophisticated computerised despatch system, Central Cabs really is moving into the 21st century, and to this day is still a family run company which endeavours to put its customers first.
